Many pieces have to be in place for the Upstate Cancer Center to develop into the $74 million complex that will transform cancer treatment for Central New Yorkers. One of the most important structural pieces is the underground electrical cables, power feeds and conduit, part of a $6.24 million infrastructure improvement project by National Grid.

"The project will help drive new residential and commercial construction projects along the route and neighboring areas and support the reliability and flexibility of our local network," says Kenneth Daly, National Grid president for New York.

The project impacts the University Hill area in Syracuse, helping to stimulate growth and vitality of one of the region's premier economic engines, including many of the largest employers: Upstate Medical University, Syracuse University, SUNY ESF, Crouse Hospital, Hutchings Psychiatric Center and the VA Hospital.

"Their growth means expansion, and this means jobs," says David Mankiewicz, president of the University Hill Corporation. "Syracuse's future hinges on successful collaborations like this. The progress that has been made on the University Hill area is evidence of what people can do by working together."

The electrical upgrades involve installation from the Temple Street substation to the University Hill area. Construction around the Hill area is expected to be completed before the start of the fall semester. The entire project will conclude by the end of the year.
